The Improving Safety and Economic Opportunities for IDPs and Returnees project, implemented by Al-Mesalla in partnership with the International Rescue Committee, addresses the complex challenges facing displaced communities in Sinjar. Central to the project's mandate is the recognition that the successful reintegration and sustainable livelihoods of displaced individuals depend on their ability to acquire skills and competencies relevant to the labor market. The project also provides psychological support to women survivors in Sinjar and raises awareness about combating violence against women and girls. As part of this initiative, Al-Mesalla has opened two centers in Sinjar: the Economic Recovery Center, which offers professional and economic empowerment services, and the Women's Protection and Empowerment Center, which provides services for women, including case management, psychological support, and awareness programs.
Services provided by the project:
- Customized vocational training: At the heart of the initiative is a set of carefully coordinated vocational training programs tailored to the unique needs and aspirations of displaced and returnee individuals. These programs equip participants with practical skills, enhancing their employability and facilitating meaningful participation in the workforce.
- Entrepreneurship Development: To complement the vocational training initiatives, specialized training programs in business start-up aim to nurture entrepreneurial talents and promote small business development among the beneficiaries. Through comprehensive training in business planning, management, and marketing strategies, participants are empowered to develop sustainable projects and open new paths to economic self-sufficiency.
- Assistance grants to small enterprises: Recognizing the pivotal role of small enterprises in stimulating economic recovery and community revitalization, the project provides financial grants to support the establishment and expansion of entrepreneurship projects initiated by displaced individuals and returnees. These grants reduce financial barriers and facilitate the realization of entrepreneurial aspirations, promoting self-reliance and community-led economic recovery.
- Case Management: The project manages cases of violence against women in Sinjar, providing psychological and social empowerment.
- Counseling and psychological support: The project offers counseling and psychological support to help women cope with their experiences and build resilience.
- Social activities and educational courses for women and girls: A variety of social activities and educational courses are offered to enrich the lives of women and girls and promote their personal development.
- Awareness Sessions: The project conducts awareness sessions to educate and raise awareness among women on various topics, enhancing their knowledge and awareness.
- Special empowerment sessions for women and girls: The project organizes empowerment sessions specifically focused on women and girls, aiming to build their confidence and capabilities.
By adopting a holistic approach to safety and economic empowerment, the project not only addresses immediate livelihood needs but also lays the foundation for lasting resilience and prosperity among the population in Sinjar. Through strategic investments in vocational training, entrepreneurship, and small business development, the project enables individuals to rebuild their lives, support their families, and actively contribute to the socio-economic revitalization of their communities in the aftermath of conflict and displacement.
