Erbil, Iraq –
As part of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, Al-Mesalla Organization, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), inaugurated the “De City Zeren” Women’s Handicrafts Exhibition at the Erbil International Fair.
The exhibition was opened in the presence of Mr. Omid Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, and Mr. Barzan Akram Mantak, Head of the NGO Department, highlighting a shared commitment to addressing the challenges faced by women, including women from refugee communities. Through handicrafts, the exhibition embodied the resilience, talent, and cultural richness that women contribute to society.
A Celebration of Creativity and Resilience
Over the course of its two-day opening, the exhibition attracted more than 1,000 visitors, including government representatives, civil society organizations, and members of the public.
On display was a wide range of women’s handicrafts—from traditional textiles and embroidery to pottery—allowing attendees to engage directly with the women artisans and learn about the cultural significance behind each creation.
The exhibition’s primary objective was to provide a platform for women to showcase their unique skills and creativity. Beyond their artistic value, these handicrafts represent a means of promoting economic independence for women and strengthening their role in society.
Al-Mesalla’s Commitment
Mr. Ibrahim Ismail, Executive Director of Al-Mesalla Organization, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to building a society free from violence.
He emphasized:
“Through the empowerment of women, we empower society as a whole. This exhibition is a testament to the transformative power of creativity. We will continue to highlight the resilience and creativity of women, while addressing the pressing issue of violence against them.”
